Becoming a Member
BGVFD has provided emergency fire services to the citizens of Roberts Place, Bowling Green and Potomac Park since 1947. Many individuals have donated their time and energy without monetary compensation to protect the lives and property of the community.
As always, we are looking for individuals to join our organization. If you ever thought about becoming a Firefighter, now is your chance to make it happen. We are not only looking for persons to participate in firefighting, but need individuals to assist with fund raising and other administrative functions within the company. There are many jobs within the fire department and even little jobs provide a big benefit.
Members must be at least 17 years of age, in relatively good physical health, no criminal record and have a willingness to learn. The many benefits of being a Firefighter include helping your community, life insurance, training, as well as a $3500 state tax break. Everyone receives appropriate safety equipment and training at no cost.
If after reading this you think you would like to be a member, you can start the process by calling us to schedule a tour of the station, to talk to a member, or to fill out an application. Once an application, along with the $10 fee is completed, the membership committee will meet with you to provide an overview of what it takes to be a volunteer. Next, the membership committee will present your information at a scheduled Department Meeting. Your application will be voted on and, if accepted, you will be placed on a 1-year probation period.
Becoming a member can be very rewarding. Knowing that you are providing assistance to the community, surrounding areas and helping people in a time of need, saving life and property is a worthwhile endeavor. This is one way you can make a difference and have a positive impact on other people’s lives. The knowledge and experience you gain from the many aspects of the Fire Department and emergency services will stay with you for a lifetime.
If you meet the qualifications, you can join this dedicated group of VOLUNTEERS who help protect your life and property day and night. If interested, applications for volunteer Firefighters are available by just calling or stopping by the BGVFD station.
